"The Rat Boy is a fine story, a gripping piece of work, and well executed with some terrifically spooky characters." - Tim O'Brien, author of "The Things They Carried"
Winner of the Nelson Algren Award for Short Fiction
"My mother caught Roy Lambert looking through her bedroom window at a quarter to four in the morning."
Roy Lambert also happens to be a Vietnam vet who served with Gerard--the brother of the eponymous Rat Boy, who inherited from his brother a necklace made of human teeth and shows Roy where he can sleep, deep in the tunnels below Los Angeles.
The Rat Boy knows from problems. His estranged father is a police officer with proclivities for shotguns and domestic violence, and perhaps not estranged enough. His mother mourns the son she lost to the war. And the Rat Boy? He’s trying to sort through his life, his memories of his brother, and what little Roy Lambert leaves behind--about Roy Lambert’s fate, he chooses not to worry too much, instead giving over to what little hope he’s ever known.

This is the story of a boy in Los Angeles whose older brother was killed in Vietnam. The guy across the street, Roy, is a fellow vet who claims Gerard (the narrator's brother) was a standup guy who died like a hero, but Roy is an untrustworthy pervert who spends his days pestering his mom and peeking at women through their windows. He also has a brood of puppies, and he spends some time bonding with the young boy, getting drunk with him, and wandering around in the sewers beneath LA with him.I found this short story to be remarkable for what it said about coping with the ghosts we all keep, of the way we almost tend to recreate those who have died, making them into larger-than-life heroes to compensate for the loss. Brown has the perfect, unpretentious style of someone who knows they don't have to show off, because they really have something to say.
It'll take you less than an hour to read it, and it is profound. Read it.
